The Circular Economy: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Regenerate, Re-Think
Nature is a provider, from the air we breathe to maintenance of all life through food sources, re-growth with seeds, plants and natural by-products, such as the multiple uses of aloe vera plants, including medicinal, skin care, food. The foundation of complex bio-systems, wildlife, agriculture, and most astoundingly, the endless beauty of nature continuously unfolding through flowers, forests, lakes and much more. Nature also shows us the importance of its intrinsically cyclical character as it continuously renews. Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.
The circular economy embodies the principles of reusing existing materials in to new products, minimising waste or indeed eliminating it in its entirety via further re-use and rethinking through innovative ways a discarded product can be recycled in to new uses prolonging its product life. Our current economies largely follow a linear model whereby for example, synthetic plastic is created through the use of crude oil and natural gas, finite earth resources and products manufactured. After use, the product is largely discarded creating landfills and pollution. Obtain, Manufacture, Throw Away.
In contrast, a circular economy promotes regeneration, with a number of innovative technologies and engineering capabilities emerging and currently in place. Including the implementation of bio-degradable packaging across food manufacturing, the use of technologies in recycling electronics to more accurately recover valuable materials for re-purposing. The fashion industry re-configuring the use of textiles particularly across recycling centres with more accurate digital readings of garments components for re-use.
As cycles naturally renew within our green world, the application of circularity in our economies holds multiple benefits. The preservation of natural and finite resources as demand for new raw materials reduces, with potential for the creation of more efficient supply chains, lower costs for businesses and growth of new products and corresponding markets. The environmental benefits are of core importance with circular measures attracting lower emissions and waste reduction as less is produced.
Creativity, innovation, and re-thinking of the way we view waste can open many possibilities for a green future. Positive measures for a more sustainable future.
